Joan’s Story
Joan Canby’s poetry has been published in Poetry South, Forage, Place Journal, California Quarterly, The Hawaiian Advertiser, Illyas Honey, Texas Observer, Forces, Beginnings, New Voices, Cape Rock, Voices Project, Brevitas, Broken Plate, Main Street Rag, Presence, Thema, Heron Clan and Frogpond.
Her chapbook Metaxe was published in 2010 about the Holy Land. Her stories and articles have appeared in numerous magazines, including International Society for Performance Instruction, Society of Technical Communicators, Mature Living, Women’s Circle, Yankee Horseman’s Pedlar, Road Rider, Modus Operandi and Noticias Santa Barbara Historical Society.
She was the recipient of a second place prize in biography for National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) for her biography of Marie Louise, Empress of France, and Archduchess of Parma.
Her chapbook Write of Divorce was a quarterfinalist for the Mary Ballard Chapbook 2013 contest. Her chapbook of 27 Pantoums Sunrise to Moonlight was a semifinalist for the Mary Ballard Chapbook 2014 contest.
Joan Canby spent 30 years as a Technical Writer, Course Developer and Project Manager working for Hughes Aircraft Company, General Dynamics, L.M. Ericsson Telecom and Nortel Networks. Currently she lives in Garland, Texas. She has her own Writing and Editing business Oak Tree Enterprises. She has been a Lecturer in English Composition at the University of Texas at Dallas, taught ESOL (Writing and Grammar) at Richland College, Humanities at Collin College, and poetry classes for Writer’s Garret in Dallas. She has also taught Humanities, English and Mythology classes online for the University of Phoenix.
